Illawarra Target 2000
A media campaign to empower the Illawarra community to aim for personal best in the two years prior to the Sydney 2000 Olympics was developed based on evidence that many diseases can be prevented or better managed through lifestyle behaviours. Nineteen local organisations contributed finance, resources and expertise. Branded "Illawarra Target 2000", unpaid media support included weekly health columns in the two main local papers, regular television and radio Community Service Announcements and news stories about lifestyle behaviours, including the progress of individual 'Lifestyle Challengers'. A booklet outlining lifestyle behaviours was developed and distributed through GPs and partner organisations, and events were held to involve individuals at a community level
