How to get the most out of visiting general practice

Know your background

Make sure you know about:
••  any illnesses or operations you have had
••  any medications you are taking
••  any allergies you may have
••  any members of your family who have had any serious or inherited illness

Know your problem

Think about your problem and write down the following:
••  When did it start?
••  If you are in pain, what is the pain like?
••  Does anything make it better or worse?

Ask questions

Make a list of questions you have. Make sure you understand the GP's explanation of your problem. Ask about the treatment offered and any side effects this treatment may have. Some people can't follow a treatment plan for some reason.  It may be too expensive, or unacceptable for some reason. Tell your GP if you can't follow the treatment they have suggested so that an alternative can be discussed.

Tell your doctor if you have any worries or concerns

Some people are afraid that their problem may mean something serious, like cancer or heart disease. It is important to tell your GP about these fears, so that they can explain more about your condition if necessary.

Be prepared to come back to your GP to see how things are going.
