Medicare Item for Mental Health Treatment Plan 2702

GPs who have not completed accredited Mental Health Skills Training by 1 January 2010 will use the new Medicare item number 2702 for developing a Mental Health Treatment Plan (Scheduled fee: $125.95). To qualify for the higher fee ($160.45, item 2710) GPs need to complete a GPMHSC accredited course. GPMHSC will provide Medicare Australia with a list of those GPs who have completed the required training. GPs not on the list will only be able to access the new 2702 number. GPMHSC will provide regular updates to Medicare of GPs who have undertaken the training. It is advised there will be a time lag of between two to six weeks between completion of the training and Medicare notifying GPs. GPs are advised to hold accounts for the 2710 item number until notification by Medicare that they are eligible to claim a 2710.

If a GP claims 2710 and is not registered to do so, then the account will not be paid. The system will not automatically default to the lower fee. If a patient takes a claim for a 2710 to Medicare and the GP is not registered, the claim will not be processed. For a list of Mental Health Skills Accredited Training courses go to:

MBS Online will be updated to include the new 2702 item number and Explanatory Notes by 1 January 2010. Please note, there will be no change to the 2712 (Review) item number.
