Graduate School of Medicine

The University of Wollongong's Graduate School of Medicine opened in 2007. The GSM aims to produce excellent medical practitioners who have the capacity and desire to contribute to the enhancement of health care for patients in all geographic settings, but particularly in regional, rural and communties.

The GSM curriculum has four themes: medical sciences, research and critical analysis, personal and professional development and clinical competencies. This latter theme is clinically led and provides students with the opportunity to start developing their clinical skills from the first year (in Phase 1), in a number of settings including general practices. More senior (Phase 3) students will experience a year long placement based in general practices but integrated with local hospital and community health care facilities in remote, rural and regional NSW, including the Illawarra.

At the end of 2008, there were thirty-eight GP teaching practices in the Illawarra with over 70 GPs teaching students in their practice, and many more contributing to clinical, research and governance areas of the GSM. For further information visit the Graduate School of Medicine website
